Biography

"Momentum? Yeah, we got that."

Sad Marvin is the culmination of a long-time partnership between bassist Corey Schofield and guitarist Filthy Rich Savoie, who forged a partnership while playing together in their NH hometown. After rejoining forces when they both found themselves in Boston, they began developing songs that would eventually become the core of Sad Marvin. The band has been witness to a revolving cast of characters and is poised to put all its hard work and determination to good use.

Sad Marvin is pioneering a blend of power, melody, and groove-rock fundamentals with mixes of progressive timing that keep the ear on edge. The songs tread through the pleasant structures of various rock styles, tapping influences from funk, alternative, britpop, indie, hard rock, and jazz to keep even the most discriminating listener surprised and interested while still feeling a healthy level of familiarity.

Sad Marvin's blazing live performances never fail to captivate a room, as evidenced by their strong and growing fanbase in Boston. Sad Marvin doesn't believe in shoegazing and delivers 100% of their energy directly to the audience in clubs such as The Avalon, The Paradise, The Middle East (Up and Down), The Abbey Lounge, O'Briens, Great Scott and many others. Sad Marvin was also a finalist in the 2004 Emergenza International music competition, has been featured on major-market Boston stations WBCN, WAAF (live in-studio performance + interview), WFNX (in-studio interview), WBRS, WMFO, and played nationally on many college stations.

Sad Marvin has won acclaim on Garagebands.com, Nauscopy Records, Project Think Different, Centerfuse.net, The Los Angeles Times, Sonicbids.com, The Weekly Dig, the NU News, and has selflessly donated to many benefit shows.

In November 2005, Sad Marvin's brand new song "Taking Over" will be featured and released on the Project: Think Different compilation promoting social action and activism. The song was written and recorded specifically for the Empowerment album. More info at www.projectthinkdifferent.org.

The band was also included on a sold out vinyl noise remix compilation on NH's own Nauscopy Records. The wonderful FrankD did a remix of our song With You for the comp and the full, original track was included on a 3" companion CD.

What the press is saying...

"This is one of those cds that grows on you. Or, at least it did on me...The singer has something of a classic rock sound, the rest of it is hard to classify – and that's probably part of why it didn't strike me the first time I listened to it...The songwriting is concise and imaginative, the playing is top-notch, and the production is clean without being too slick. The 5 songs range in style from nearly-funk to almost-reggae to straight up rock. And with the total time coming in at just over 15 minutes, you'll probably be left wanting more... "
-Brian Mosher, Independent reviewer for The Noise, Askew Reviews, Razorcake Magazine, and NowWave Magazine

"The CD by Sad Marvin has lead vocals by a surprisingly strong singer and instrumentals by people who actually know how to play! My favorites were Sunday and Haunted. I really like it...I played the whole cd three times in the car and my two favorites a few more times."
-Sheri Parks, host on NPR affiliated WTMD-FM

"No [kidding] Sherlock, Sad Marvin's CD is bloody good. Nice energy level, never overdone or indulgent! I especially like "With You," "Election" and "Haunted." I will use some of "With You" for a bumper (music intro/outro to commercials during show).
-Greg Allen, Nationally syndicated host of "The Right Balance", former songwriter for Diamond Dupree with Ronnie Spector, and 20 year veteran rock critic for the Atlantic City Press.

"I love music like this.  It's like hard driving rock with this punk edge.  And so many times what can spoil it is there is a weak vocal...but Sad Marvin has it all!  You guys sound like a band that has been together forever!  I get this feeling like all the members really care about the band and [are] dedicated.  I wonder how I will sneak a piece of this music on this country radio station?"
-Rachel Lehcar, KAIR-FM

"Originality seems to be a thing of the past, and then comes along a song that puts faith back into a band who is original."
-Max Meltdown, Realrockradio.net

"The last of the Visiting Scholars of rock series was had at the Abbey lounge last week (2/10/05)- and we were treated to three incredible bands... The surprise hit of the night was Sad Marvin, who packed the house and had people movin."
-Pressure Drop Productions

"Sad Marvin opens up the night putting the Avalon atmosphere on the right track for a successful night. The powerful singer’s voice and the band’s tightness make the energy of their songwriting overflow onto the audience, totally unprepared to such a catchy beginning, making it jumping around and heating the room up at the right level."
